My nieces' predictions
I have two young nieces, Maddy (my brother's daughter) who will be 6 in late September, and Ally (Mike's sister's daughter) who will be 5 in a couple of weeks. They have both been asked when they think the baby will be born and how big the baby will be. Maddy's first guess was that the baby would be born in 2 years and would be 2 1/2 inches! Ally guessed that the baby would be born on August 50th and would be 2 pounds! Apparently Maddy has since modified her guess and said that the baby will be born in 2 weeks. That makes me much happier! You girls are adorable!

Saxophone
Miles and Mike are behind me playing Mike's trombone, at Miles' request. Mike asked Miles what instrument he wants to play when he gets bigger. Miles thought for a few moments and then said "saxophone." Mike told him who else he knows that plays saxophone, and Miles said, and "I play saxophone too!" Hmm, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

My first phone call
Mike took Miles to a baseball game tonight at our local minor league stadium. It is a daddy and son evening. Just a few minutes ago I got a call from the cell phone, and it was Miles saying 'Hi Mommy." He went on to tell me he was at a baseball game and then said "I love you mommy." Aww, very sweet. Now, for those of you that may not know, Miles does not like to talk on the phone if someone is on the other end. He only wants to pretend talk on the phone. So this was very special. Mike got on the phone and said that Miles wanted to call me and say hi. I have sweet guys in my life!

And again...
We were in Labor & Delivery again last night. Well last evening. And yes, I am home and still pregnant. This is really getting old. Yesterday started well enough, I had a day at the spa planned. A prenatal massage followed by a light lunch, a manicure and a pedicure. I've never felt so pampered, normally I go in for one thing at a time, but this was a treat. Well, shortly after the prenatal massage I felt contractions starting, but not painful, just uncomfortable. They weren't too often or too bad, so I finished my day at the spa.
By the time I got home the contractions were much more frequent and much more uncomfortable. They continued to get more frequent and more intense, starting to get painful. By around 4pm (ish) they were so painful that most of the contractions had me in tears. Mike and Miles had both been napping since I had returned from the spa. There was no way I was walking upstairs to get Mike, so I just gritted my teeth through the contractions until they woke up. Which was a bit before 5pm. By 5:30 the contractions were still strong and often and were not letting up at all, so we made the decision to head into the hospital. We packed up Miles and dropped him off to our dear friends' house and went to the hospital. By the time we got there, I could feel that things had definitely calmed down. I was still getting contractions, but they were not as frequent and not nearly as painful. I was convinced to go in and get checked out. But of course, the contractions just continued to die down.
The good news is that the doctor did an ultrasound when I first got in (since the baby was not in a good birthing position), and the baby has turned and as of last night he is head down. So I do not have to rush in to the hospital the next time I am in tears from contractions. I figure we will drive around for a while since car rides seem to calm my contractions down.
I am hoping that the next time I post about going to the hospital there will be a picture of our new baby to go along with the post. I am really tired of going to the hospital and coming home pregnant.

Home haircuts
In another effort to try to save some money, I picked up a home hair cut kit the other day in order to try to do Miles' haircuts ourselves. Yesterday we tried it out. Mike actually gave Miles his haircut, then Mike asked me to cut his hair. Mike wanted to go short since it has been so hot lately. Here are the results, my two guys with their new haircuts.
And Miles really didn't want to have his picture taken, so here is one of him crying, which, when he saw the picture he laughed and said "That's a funny picture, hehe."

Another false alarm
Well, last night (early this morning really) Mike and I spent another 3 hours in the Labor & Delivery department of the local hospital. I had gone out to a fun Mom's Night Out at my friend's house, spent much of the evening floating in her pool and chit chatting with friends. I got home a bit after 12 - which is the latest I have been out socially in many years! Shortly after Mike and I went to bed I started feeling stomach pains, then a bit later realized that the pains were coming and going. I could not fall asleep, so I got up to try to walk it off, then I realized that these weren't stomach pains, but rather, they were contractions. About an hour and a half later they were getting more intense, were only a couple of minutes apart, and I could not talk or walk through them. So we called a friend to come watch Miles and we were off to the hospital.
Well, they get me all hooked up and even I can tell that the intensity and frequency of these contractions have already lessened. But they have to finish checking certain things. While we were there another woman came in, we could hear that she thought her water had broken. We later found out that she was 9 cm dialated when she came in. We know she did not get an epidural - we heard. Very shortly after she arrived she had a 10 lbs 11 oz baby!
But back to us. The doctor wanted to see me, so we had to wait for him to finish delivering and (I assume) repairing any damage for this other woman. The nice doc came in to see us and agreed with the nurse that my belly did look a bit oddly shaped. (This is nothing new to me, but only shows up during contractions, so the doctors have not seen it before.) He wheels in an ultrasound machine and we get to see our little guy again. But he is definitely not in the right position. His head is up around my left ribs. He is, according to the doctor, in a transverse lie. And I am told any time I think I am in labor to get to the hospital asap because there is no way that this child is coming out without a c-section (unless he moves before then).
Also the doctor and nurse tell us that I am not ready to deliver now, but they don't know if I am in the beginning stages of labor and that I might be back in a few hours, or it might be false and I could be back in several weeks. Well, I can tell you that it was false, as I have felt no contractions today. But, at least we got pictures of this guy, and we know where he is in there.

Brushing his hair
This evening I let Miles watch a movie. As he was watching the movie I checked a few things on the computer. When I went back in the living room, Miles was not there. I found him in the bathroom, no light on, brushing his hair with his toothbrush. This child has never brushed his own hair unless he stumbled across a brush or comb. So here he is, in the dark, brushing the hair on the back of the top of his head, with his toothbrush. I gave him one of my hairbrushes, and he asked for the other hairbrush, and he proceeded to continue to brush the same spot on his head with both hairbrushes.

Miles' Comments...
Miles' vocabulary has been growing very quickly lately. As well as his ability to express himself verbally. Here are a few examples from this week.
1. Miles thought Mike tossed a ball so Miles said "Daddy don't throw that ball" Mike: "I didn't" Miles: "Yes you did it, on purpose"
2. A few minutes later, Mike was at the computer and Miles followed him in, Mike asked him for something, Miles said okay, then he said "I promise."
3. Last night we were at the park for the community band concert, at one point I was talking to another Mom while Miles was playing, I thought Miles called for me so I went over to him. He was talking to another little boy and when I asked Miles if he needed something, he told me "Mom, Miles talking to boy." And he said this with attitude, it was very clear that I was interrupting him.
4. Later at the park, a couple of Mike's female students walked by, stopped to say hi to Miles and I, then continued on. As soon as they walked away Miles said "Eww, girls."

My first package for the new baby!
Yea! Yesterday we received our first package in the mail for the new baby. A big 'ol Thank You to Gail and Robert and the girls! It was a Texas themed gift package with cowboys and horses! And they were thoughtful and included presents and a card for big brother Miles. I know we already have pretty much everything we need for the baby, but this really helped make it seem real that a new baby is coming to our home in the very near future. And it is nice that the baby will have some new things just for him.

Splashing in the Rain
We had a little rain yesterday evening, just enough to give us a few rain puddles. And Miles loves to go splashing around in the rain puddles. Poor kid, all of the rain we have had in the last month or so has dried up to quick for him to get out and splash. So we hurried out after dinner last night. He was a little upset that the rain had stopped so he didn't get to wear his raincoat, but he had fun splashing in the puddles up and down our little side street.

A Day at the Beach
Miles and I spent the day at the beach yesterday - nearly the entire day! It was great. We headed out mid-morning and didn't get home until just before dinnertime. We met up with one of my Mommy friends and her kids and we all just played and relaxed at the beach all day. We went out to Assateague, it was not too busy and the ponies were out visiting the beach. Miles was thrilled to see the horses on the beach.
Some of the older kids got into burying each other in the sand, so, of course, Miles wanted to be buried as well. Somehow my sunblock didn't work as well as expected, so I now have a lovely bright red face and sore shoulders. Luckily, Miles sunblock worked great as usual. I guess I should have used his stuff.
